The core of the Drum Pulper is a large cylindrical drum, typically fabricated from high-quality, wear-resistant steel. The drum rotates on a horizontal axis and contains internal lifters or paddles that lift and drop the incoming material to promote mechanical disintegration and mixing. A controlled feed arrangement introduces bales, rolls, or shredded waste paper into the drum. The design emphasizes even feeding to avoid clogging and to maintain a consistent pulp concentration. The Drum Pulper incorporates a rotor/stator arrangement or internal beating elements that create shear and impact forces to separate fibers and break down adhesive bonds.

 

Paper, board or recycled feedstock is introduced into the rotating drum where tumbling, shear, and impact forces loosen and disperse the fibers into a water medium, forming a slurry. During pulping, non-fibrous contaminants (plastics, staples, tape, glue lumps, etc.) tend to remain intact and can be concentrated for removal. The Drum Pulper’s screening, flotation or discharge arrangements allow these contaminants to be separated with minimal fiber loss. Operators target a specific pulp consistency (percent solids) suitable for downstream equipment (screens, cleaners, refiners).
